On our way back down a gravel road that abuts the Baptism River in northeastern Minnesota after a June fishing trip, we once again, for the third year in a row, noticed a pair of trumpeter swans on the opposite bank of the river. All three years they’ve been in nearly the same spot, suggesting they had favorable nesting previously that encourages them to return to the same area. As I approached my edge of the river for a photo, their gaze was riveted on me until their heads suddenly swung to my left. My poorer hearing than theirs never heard the approaching vehicle from the same direction we had come until it was much closer, attesting to the great hearing of these birds. The entire time I was there the only movement from them were their heads, showing little fear of either me or the approaching vehicle.
