Superior Harvest Moon
Superior Harvest Moon
(24.5 in.  x 18 in.), $3500.00

Coming back across Lake Superior from a run where it unloaded iron ore pellets at Conneaut, OH on Lake Erie, the 858-foot M/V Roger Blough is headed for the CN Two Harbors, MN oredocks. There it will load iron ore pellets once again, this time for Gary, IN on Lake Michigan. Not long after sunset has the full moon risen over a near calm Lake Superior in this depiction of the Great Lakes Fleet vessel pushing across the lake through low, rolling waves. Most often I will paint from my own experiences but the scene here was described to me by a crewmember on the Blough who witnessed the event. He was so moved by the event that he inspired me to paint from his description. Actually, he told me that in their upbound run from Conneaut they experienced a Full Harvest Moon on Lake Erie, Lake Huron as well as Lake Superior with each moonrise being only about 30 minutes different from the night before. He also informed me that the Full Harvest Moon is the name of the full moon nearest the Autumnal Equinox. From what I was able to research, his knowledge of the moon was spot on.
