Wintering Goldeneyes Most migrating ducks fly to far southern regions each fall, but not these cold-tolerating goldeneyes. The divers summer in the Northwest Territory and further up in the Arctic but this group flew only as far south as the Duluth Ship Canal during the winter of 2005. Strong currents in the Canal usually keep the channel open all winter and with Lake Superior covered with ice as far as the eye could see, the goldeneyes made this their winter residence. Altogether, there appeared to be 100-150 swimming and diving, making this February day look as though it were in the middle of summer. |
