Jackpine for Breakfast

A covey of spruce grouse is up in the jackpines, dining on needles in a remote part of northeastern Minnesota west of Diana Lake. The 2 more brightly colored males seem to be putting on a show for the drabber colored females, whom incidentally do not seem to be impressed. This covey had 8 more birds on the ground, picking up gravel to be used in the gizzards to help grind up the food.
