Split Rock Lighthouse, on the jagged north shore of Lake Superior, was once a beacon to warn ships of the dangers that lie in these treacherous waters. The only time the lighthouse is lit these days, however, is on November 10th to commemorate the sinking of the ore carrier S/S Edmund Fitzgerald in 1975 and the loss of it's entire 29 man crew. The snow owls in the foreground are early winter visitors from the Arctic, signifying a shortage of food in that region.
