At 2:30 in the afternoon of November 9, 1975, the 767' S/S Arthur M. Anderson of the U.S. Steel Great Lakes Fleet leaves the dock at Two Harbors, MN with a near capacity load of taconite pellets, downbound for Gary, IN. About an hour earlier, under nearly windless skies and nearly non-existent waves, the S/S Edmund Fitzgerald departed Superior, WI with an equally near capacity cargo of taconite. But about 30 miles to the northeast in Two Harbors now, the clouds have thickened ominously and the waves have grown, a forecast of the horrific weather to come as the two vessels will fight for their very existence against the fury of Lake Superior.
